When my husband had to go to traffic court awhile ago, he was asked to “swear to tell the truth, and the whole truth so help you god”…and he said ” There is no god, but I will tell the truth, so help me myself”. That is probably why he got the $250 fine despite the video evidence that he wasn’t guilty of not moving over far enough to go around a cop car on the side of a two-lane highway in Bumfuck, Illinois.

I was selected for jury duty and was the only juror who didn’t swear on the bible. Instead I just made an affirmation. Of course I don’t live in the USA…
Bumfuck Illinois…have a town? I know when you get further south it is almost like the bible belt down there.
How can the judge deny video evidence? What kind of video was taken and why?
Bumfuck illinois was Grundy county west of Chicago. The video was from the cop car video cam. When my husband argued that they were disregarding video evidence the judge warned he was being belligerant and threatened him with contempt of court.
I find it ironic that the 1st Amendment says it will not hold any one religion over another, yet a person must swear on a Xtian Bible. How screwed is that? What if the person were Buddhist or Taoist or any other fucking religion but Xtian?! They would still be expected to swear on that book with the same out, as if some supreme being is going stike them dead if they lie.
If you had the time and money you and your husband could probably make an example out of this judge(sue the court and the fudge) It’s quite unfortunate though that is takes so much time and money to do so.
It really sucks that so-called “justice” isn’t really blind – it’s just got selective vision and hearing. In this case, the judge heard “there is no god” and everything after that was just a blur. The video could’ve been a sizzlin’ hot porno and the judge wouldn’t have noticed.
One more example of how battered and abused the 1st Amendment is these days. I’m sorry your husband had the misfortune to have to put it to the test. I think you should sue…maybe the FFRF would be interested in helping out!
The judicial system in this particular county, as well as the county we live in, is very corrupt. We would be in for a long drawn-out and nasty battle. But it would be a good idea to bring it to the attention of the FFRF or Americans United. Maybe there are other cases being reported and can compile them to make one mass complaint.
