On Commenting

This is an atheist site. It’s an atheist site that rants about encroaching theocracy, evil done from religion, and religious hypocrisy, stupidity, and irrationality. That doesn’t mean Xians or other religious folks can’t make worthwhile contributions to our discussion,  but it does mean that stopping in to witness for Jeebus, telling us how sorry you are for us, offering us another lame-ass attempt at Pascal’s Wager or a Free Will theodicy, or threatening us with the burning fires of hell is the moral equivalent of spam, and will be treated as such. If you have a profound need to post such things, get your own soapbox and bandwidth. It’s free at, e.g., Blogger.com, and you can link to us to your heart’s content.

I know you have to monitor comments.
I realize what a pain proselytizing and witnessing is.
The same old tired, discredited arguments.
BUT! Instead of banning and deleting, why not give them their own special place?
Redirect all the hate mail, off topic, witnessing and proselytizing comments
to “Other Opinions.” Or maybe FMAR. Frequently Made Asinine Remarks.
Not a debate forum, can’t comment on them, just there for us to laugh at.
Their only real risk is they destroy the flow of comments, and regulars get up in arms and waste time refuting the same old tired arguments.

hogarm, You are saying maybe give them another page they can have all to their own? We could have a link at the top next to commenting, or next to commenting. Let me think about that.

  3. hogarm says:

Add to: Home, About, and On Commenting, another heading.
Call it something like, Off Topic, Other Opinions. OTOO.
So when someone posts proselytizing, personal witnessing, or other asinine posts, redirect it to OTOO. Maybe word-press could even automatically redirect some email addresses.
Imagine it as a long list of stupid posts, in no sequence other than date.
Not set up to be a debate forum, don’t want us to waste our time trying to de-convert the de-convertable. Should not be a way for us to even comment on a post.
I get the ffrf paper, Freethought Today. Periodically they include “Sharing the Crank Mail.” It is entertaining, informative and scary.

hogarm, let me do some tinkering. That might just be entertaining.

Religion/fascism go well together because they rely on scapegoating anyone who doesn’t agree with those evil ideologies.

Religion/fascism go well together because they are anti-atheist and anti-liberal.

I just want to say I enjoy reading articles on this website. If I find one that I like and want to comment, what should I do? I have already registered on ex-christian.net. I am a somewhat shy person. I would like to talk to the moderators/authors about my experiences with religion. I don’t want my real name used, so I will just use my initials. Sorry about that.

  7. Stardust says:

Welcome JP. Just leave a comment at the end of the article you wish to join in a discussion or shares an experience, etc. Many of us do not use our real names. Thanks for reading our website.

I have read Ray Garton’s posts for several months now. His post on May 30 was excellent. I was also raised Adventist and I can relate to what he said. I would like to talk with him about my experiences. What should I do?

Post a comment on Ray’s latest post and ask him for a reply. He is also on facebook I think. Good luck and welcome to our little corner of the world

  13. noname says:

Thanks jimmer54 for your reply. I have posted a comment for Ray and I am sure he will respond.

I posted a comment for Ray last month, and he hasn’t responded. I am not interested in joining facebook, but I would like to send him an email. What should I do?

Try sending an email through this site (atheistoasis@yahoo.com). We each are independent writers and have no extra way of contacting each other. Partly for our sanity safety and privacy. good luck and I hope you get through. It also occurs to me that he may be very busy and is unable to handle the emails he receives.

I haven’t received a response from Ray. How much email does he receive? Anyway, the reason why I am here is because about two years ago I read several of his posts on Beliefnet.com. After telling of his experiences in adventism and explaining why it’s a cult, some of the posters responded rudely. I recall one of them always called him a “liar”, at least two others insisted that he “prove it”, and another would always quote scripture and came across to me as arrogant. I was impressed at the way Ray was able to stick up for himself.
Some time last year I began reading posts from Formeradventist.com, and while they say that adventism nearly fits the description of a cult, they STILL quote scripture, which really bugs me, so I began reading posts from exchristian.net, and finally this past August I began posting on their forums. I don’t mean to rant so much, but I just wanted to let you know why I am here.

I just needed to come on and say: I think you are way cool. I just read your blog about Christmas. Wanted to comment on it, but it was closed to further comments, so I’ll just say what I wanted to say here, if that’s alright.

I have friends from pretty much every religion and non-religion – believers and non-believers and the great unlabeled – and, beyond their beliefs about God, they all share certain things in common: They’re all open-minded, kind, intelligent, have great integrity, and have the ability to laugh at themselves and their own foibles. I believe morality comes from empathy – being able to feel the pain someone else feels – and I would call all my friends empathetic. I don’t think that belief in a god determines whether you’re a moral person or not. I’ve known plenty of theists who are not terribly moral people, and I’ve known plenty of atheists who are.

Anyway. Just had to come on and give you my two cents worth.
