“New Atheists”? Not really, just finally speaking up

More and more atheists are done with standing in the background, biting our tongues while giving religious folks the “respect” to proselytize, evangelize, preach, badger, and interject their beliefs into our secular schools and government (and even our personal space). The time has arrived when atheists are finally speaking up loudly and firmly — we have had enough! Sitting back and being polite has gotten us nowhere except in the mess we now find ourselves in the political realm (generally the Republicans, though the Democrats don’t have a chance without some form of sky daddy beliefs). Fundamentalist Christians are running rampant throughout our local, state and Federal government. Being “tolerant” has only encouraged the willfully ignorant to try and take over and attempt to turn this free nation into an intolerant theocracy where homophobia is rampant, where women do not have a say about their own health and sexual issues, and those who are not Christian are considered to be unpatriotic and a threat to “Christian values”.

As stated in Wikipedia:

“New Atheism is the name given to the ideas promoted by a collection of 21st-century atheist writers who have advocated the view that “religion should not simply be tolerated but should be countered, criticized, and exposed by rational argument wherever its influence arises.”

When an atheist speaks up, especially when she or he is making a point that a believer cannot provide adequate argument against, they go into persecution mode and start the name calling…”angry atheist” being one of the most common accusations. “You’re so angry, why are you so angry? What has happened in your life to make you so angry against God?”

And when we try to explain that it is THEIR intolerance and their pushiness and attempt to assimilate that we disagree with, the persecution mode kicks on in their brains and their ears close and they don’t want to hear anything that might put a seed of doubt into their “faith”.

It’s a free country…people can believe whatever they choose to believe. But when those beliefs are being forced upon others, when that faith causes discrimination and oppression of others, when that faith interferes with the principles this country was founded on and interferes with the freedoms and happiness of others, then those believers need to be put in their place. It’s time to say ENOUGH.

I have been an atheist since I was in high school (forty years ago) and have had to explain that my beliefs are not questionable-I have none !~! The burden of proof is theirs and they have yet to convince me. Even my late sister, the missionary, had to let rest her deepest argument. when asked why she was right and the Buddhists, Shintos, Jews and Catholics are wrong. said it had to be Faith–I have faith: in Science, Evidence and Responsibility. Thanks for speaking out and providing a shift in the Overton Window.

  2. Stardust says:

Lynda, you are exactly right…the burden of proof is on the person making the claim. If I say there is a unicorn living in my back yard that eats rainbows I better be ready to provide evidence of it or the men in the little white coats will come take me away. But call that belief a religion and we are expected to to respect those fantasies about an invisible superhero who lives in another realm unquestioningly with zero evidence.

Welcome back Star…to some of your more involved commenting…
And welcome, as well, to the new poster…
    OK…Just a (relatively) quick rant(?)…
All religions, as we old-timer atheists know, are TOTALLY made-up…by demonstrably ignorant, often extremely mean-spirited charlatan zealots…absolutely Irrational, demonstrably sadomasochistic, even questionably “moral”…AND, they’re all basically various forms of mind-bogglingly endless slavery; if not outright causes of lifetime addictive, and very often serious, mental illness.
IMO, all of what we now know (and rather RECENTLY at that) from scientific, demonstrable evidence of the observable Universe(s?)…thanks to inventions like the Hubble telescope, etc…literally “scream” at us that there’s absolutely NO…not even close…so-called “Intelligent Design” in everything we observe.
For this atheist, even things like the incredible number of vicious parasitical diseases, even genetically based bad teeth, genetic childhood diseases…the “Bug Wars” (see the Science channel?), etcetera, etcetera…ad infinitum…are what SHOULD be obvious arguments against…ESPECIALLY…the amazingly vicious Abrahamic notion of the so-called “Almighty, Al-yada-zama, God”!
OK…I know…like…how many times have we been over all the shtick like I just spewed out? I’m pretty sure Stardust remembers the old, if somewhat more active, “Sean & Company” days we shared on “GifS”! 😯
Anyway, for any potential Jeebus trolls…here’s another one of my personal favorite, if more “ultra-blasphemous”, and somewhat often repeated links (check it out?):

for a whole bunch of, IMO, really great (rationally and intellectually well written) atheist articles; which cover almost every important aspect of atheistic thinking:

  5. Bronze Dog says:

A bit of nuance to the cartoon: There were a share of outspoken atheists going back to when people stopped burning atheists at the stake for revealing themselves. Usually, these atheists were giants with the determination, education, and charisma to get themselves noticed. What’s new is that the internet has given the average atheist means to spread his words and tools we can use to easily find other atheists, share thoughts, and bolster each other emotionally. We’re louder because the march of technology made it easier to be loud. We’re bold because we know we’re not alone.

What!…in honor of it being Friday the 13th?…
Here’s Sam Harris at his boldest best; and in absolutely top debating form…at, of ALL places, a longtime American educational bastion of Catholic indoctrination.
Talk about someone having some “humongous balls!”…?😉

  7. Mark says:

Excellent video ChuckA…(these people that wrote the bible use to bury their children alive in post holes in hopes that the great sky god would not knock down that building.)…that says it all. And your mention of the Hubble Telescope is of interest since after Galileo’s discovery that the sun and planets did not revolve around the Earth, the Christians in charge made it illegal to look through a telescope…punishable by death! Such good and loving people they are and willing to suppress any and all intellectual thought with death…guess that is why the Adam & Eve fable was developed since Eve was punished for eating from the tree of knowledge.

I can also relate to his serial killer comparison as I have been fighting with such Christians for years who have set child killer Hope Rippey free simply because she joined a prison church group and was “Born Again”.

  8. ChuckA says:

Thanks for your kind “feedback” comment, Mark.
And, speaking of some “REALLY NEW atheists”…

Here’s a bit of a truly atheist oriented twist on the old…erm…”Gospel good news” y’all may have ‘hoid’ about in some recent media coverage (RE: “the clergy Project.com”):

“Biggest Threat to Religion? Clergy People Coming Out as Atheists
    June 10, 2012

A burst of media attention has been focused on atheists of an unexpected stripe — clergy members. Could non-believing clergy change how we see religion?

What happens when a clergy person — a minister, a priest, a rabbi, an imam — realizes he doesn’t believe in God? And what happens when he says it out loud? What happens when they find each other; when they support each other in coping with their crises, when they help each other with resources and job counseling and other practical assistance? What happens when they encourage each other to come out? Could this affect more than just these clergy people and their followers? Could it change how society as a whole thinks and feels about religion?”

I haven’t posted here in a few months, but just wanted to say I agree with Stardust. It’s time for atheists to speak up and be heard.

  10. Stardust says:

A good sign is the number of atheists “coming out” is steadily growing. There are still many atheists hiding in the shadows of churches.

  11. Brodie says:

I haven’t posted here since it was gifs, but it’s nice to see everyone still here. It’s refreshing to find people who are also not afraid to voice their non beliefs, when so many times the xians want us to just shut up and keep our opinions to ourselves, even though they still claim they’re the ones being persecuted every day.

  12. Mark says:

ChuckA…they are loosing ground and prob why they use the prison system to recruit.
Read about the Missy Avila case, than read the blogs. One of her killers Karen Severson was released early just like Hope Rippey, and she belonged to a prison Ministry as Hope (Shanda Sharer case) did. Her friend and fellow murderer Laura Doyle was up for parole as well, not sure if she got out. What is interesting is the blogs…the same type of comments that are made about me are made to citizens who speak out against Karen’s release…wasting our time on a 20 year old crime and we should move on, God will judge her and none of our business…religion and forgiveness…bla, bla, bla. There are three times as many people bitchin about Karen’s release and the same type of people who defend Hope and Melinda are defending Karen in the same manner.
They are religious Zealots that not only release the worst of the worst from prison once they join their cult, but go around harassing citizens who protest, with tax dollars. They are also defending Tex Watson now that he is a prison minister. He is “Born Again” and should be release…just forget about the 7 innocent people he slaughtered, that was Charlie’s fault anyway.
I strongly feel the same org is involved and probably related to Prison Fellowship Ministries. So they spend a good portion of our tax dollars harassing people on the Internet who disagree with their influence. Many of the people who complain about these early release are Christians themselves, not knowing that their tax dollars and donations are used against them online, and help to release the worst of the worst, simply because they now have religion, and are mostly white.

Prison Fellowship Ministries was started by Nixon aid Colson…the guy who wanted to plant bombs around where the Vietnam protesters would gather…and he was a good Christian at the time, just thought he had that right because God spoke to him personally.

Ya need to post on the blogs about Missy, Karen Severson and the relation to Hope Rippey’s early release and I’ll work the youtube as there are many posting there under several videos about the case. We need to unite with the people defending Missy on-line and complaining about Karen’s early release, as well as Hope Rippey…get them to write victim rights orgs like Klass Kids.

  13. Stardust says:

I haven’t posted here since it was gifs, but it’s nice to see everyone still here.

Hey Brodie, nice to see you are still around! We are going to try to round everyone back up again and get the fun back into the site. It had gotten way, way too “solemn” for too long!

  14. KA says:

    Mark –
You constantly bring up the Shanda Sharer murder. That was over 30 odd years ago. Also, it was Laura Tackett, not Hope Rippey, who became born-again.
If you’re going to obsessively go on about something, do keep the facts straight.
